JetBlue Flight Diverted To Detroit After Angry Outburst From Passenger

A Las Vegas-bound Jet Blue flight was diverted over the weekend after a yelling, unruly passenger refused to cooperate.

The flight had already taken off from John F. Kennedy International airport in New York when a male passenger stood up and began shouting and waving his hands, CBS New York reported.

The pilot diverted flight 211 to Detroit, Michigan out of "an abundance of caution," Jet Blue Airways Corp. said in a statement obtained by the station. The man was taken into custody after the plane landed at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport at around 8:30 p.m.

The passenger was apparently arguing with his family at the time of the outburst, a Detroit Metro Airport spokesman told CBS New York. It is not clear what the man said but he ignored repeated attempts to calm down and could not be controlled.

"Dad, stop it!" a female voice said according to a recording of the incident obtained by the station.

Flight attendants were able to restrain him with plastic hand ties after he staggered toward the aisle.

"Flight attendants were able to get a handle on the situation relatively quickly," FBI spokesman David Porter told the station.

Though the flight was diverted, the incident "did not rise to the level of threatening the aircraft," Porter told CBS New York. It is not clear if charges were brought against the passenger or if he is still in custody.

Flight 211 continued on to Las Vegas after about two hours in Detroit and landed at around 11: 30 a.m., JetBlue told the station.

The incident is the latest in a string of mishaps involving airplanes. Last Monday, a woman on a JetBlue flight said flight attendants refused to let her 3-year-old daughter use the bathroom while the plane was still at JKF, causing the child to urinate in her seat.

In mid-April, a Southwest Airlines flight from Illinois to California was diverted to Nebraska when a passenger tried to open a door mid-flight.
