George Michael Crash: Singer Airlifted to Hospital Following Accident in the U.K.

Singer George Michael was airlifted to a hospital in the U.K. after being involved in a motor vehicle crash, the BBC reports.

The 49-year-old "Faith" singer sustained injuries in the crash Thursday on the M1 motorway near St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, reports say.

Michael's rep issued a statement Friday saying the singer was involved in a traffic accident as a passenger in a a Range Rover, according to E! Online.

According to the statement, Michael was hospitalized for "superficial cuts and bruises" but was "fine." The spokesman also said that a third party was not involved.

While reports say the circumstances of the accident are still unclear, The BBC gathered information from ambulance spokesman Gary Sanderson who said, "The man who we believe to be in his 40s sustained a head injury and following treatment, stabilization and immobilization by land and air ambulance crews, he was flown to hospital for further care."

Michael has not had the best luck with vehicular accidents. In 2010 he was arrested after crashing his car while allegedly being under the influence. He was then released early from prison. A subsequent brush with death came In 2011 for the singer when he faced a life-threatening case of pneumonia.

The British artist formed the pop group Wham in the 1980s, giving him his big start with hits like "Careless Whisper." Michael then went on as a solo artist in the late '80s, releasing the hit album "Faith."
