Twitter is rolling out its latest "mute" button to help users get rid of unwanted tweets. The new feature will be available on its website first, then will be added to OS and Android apps in the next few days.
Users have long requested a better way for dealing with "unwanted" tweets. One of the usual complaints is seeing nonsense or offensive tweets on their screen, but not being ab le to do anything about it because it is impolite to tell the other users that they are annoying, especially if that user is from one of their close circles.
"Mute gives you even more control over the content you see on Twitter by letting you remove a user's content from key parts of your Twitter experience," Twitter announced in a blog post.
The mute button is designed to get rid of the unwanted tweets in what's considered a more "polite" way because the other users will not know that they were muted. The new feature works similar to Facebook's "unfollow" or "block" features.
Meanwhile on Twitter, only third-party apps can enable the "mute" feature by deleting user's tweets after specifically identifying the user, or after choosing specific tweets by way of hashtags or keywords.
Twitter has reportedly found a way to make the mute button easily accessible in some simple steps. The first involves going to the user's profile. Next is tapping the settings icon to see a drop down menu. Lastly, selecting and tapping "mute."
Another method involves only two steps. Users can press and hold on a Tweet then select "mute" from the various options that should appear immediately. A muted user will show a red icon while an unmated user will be grey.
Meanwhile, users will continue seeing notifications when the muted user sends a message, favorite a tweet or retweeted their tweets. Hopefully, the retweeted message does not talk about all those people you have muted in your Twitter newsfeed.
