North Carolina A&T University On Lockdown Following Reports Of Gunman On Campus

A lockdown was issued at North Carolina A&T University on Monday following reports of a gunman on campus, FoxNews.com reported.

Samantha Hargrove, a spokeswoman for the university, said campus police received a call about a gunman in the General Classroom Building at 9:57 a.m.

By 10:15 a.m., an alarm was blaring on campus to alert students and faculty of the situation, FoxNews.com said. Additionally, police are searching the buildings for any suspects.

There has since been no verification of a gunman on campus or any reports of shots fired, Hargrove told The AP.

At 11:13 a.m., an email was sent out that said the university was on lockdown and the school's website uploaded a post saying there was a "shelter in place." Classes on campus are cancelled until 2 p.m.

The university's Twitter account was also used to upload alerts.

"#NCAT Shelter in place remains in affect. If you are off campus do not come to campus," read a tweet sent out around 12 p.m.

An earlier tweet, uploaded around 10:30 a.m., mentioned an unidentified Hispanic male was seen carrying a rifle in the General Classroom Building.

North Carolina A&T University, located east of Greensboro, is one of the nation's historically black colleges with an undergraduate population of over 10,000 students.
