The boy allegedly responsible for fatally stabbing a high school student who declined to go to prom with him is being held in a psych ward for at least two more weeks, the New York Daily News reported.
Chris Plaskon, 16, is accused of killing Maren Sanchez, 16, at Jonathan Law High School in Connecticut on Friday. His attorney, Richard Meehan, announced he would not be attending arraignment on Monday.
Students returned to school at the start of the week, still in shock over what happened.
"I'm mortified that he did this," junior Emma Grace told the Daily News. "Chris was somebody I would never imagine doing this at all. I always thought higher of him. Chris was always someone that was very into sports, nice, friendly, had a lot of friends."
Plaskon could be charged as an adult but he must appear in court before a decision on that is made, the Daily News said.
The tragic incident occurred in a stairwell in the afternoon. After Sanchez did not accept his invitation to prom, witnesses claim Plaskon shoved her down the stairs and cut her with a kitchen knife.
"She was always very happy and proud of who she was," Grace said. "She was an honors student, in drama club. Everybody loved her."
Students gathered on Friday night -- when prom was initially scheduled -- and held a makeshift memorial service for Sanchez on the beach.
"Today it's really sinking in. Yesterday was like you knew what happened, but you didn't know what to think about it," Kassandra Sebas said.
"The fact that I was friends with her and the fact that a lot of my friends were friends with the person that did it is really kind of a weird thing."
