In an interview with AllHipHop News, Will Smith said his son Jaden has asked for emancipation.
Will said his son asked that he be granted emancipation from his parents on his 15th birthday so that he can live in his own house. Will recounted the conversation with the 14-year-old budding actor.
"He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated,'" he said. "I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ‘Ooh.'"
If granted, Jaden would join the ranks of actors Drew Barrymore, Corey Feldman and Macaulay Culkin who were all granted emancipation from their parents and given the freedom to take charge of their own careers and lives.
Many times child emancipation requests happen over financial disputes or parents over-working their child stars. However, based on Will's interview, the situation doesn't seem to be similar. Will said that he and wife Jada may entertain his son's demands. He said he understands his son's desire for more control over his life.
"That's the backlash," he said. "On the other side, if kids just want to have command of their lives, I understand."
Jaden began acting at 3-years old on the second "Men in Black" in 2002. He appeared on Will's movie "The Pursuit of Happiness" in 2006 and "The Day the Earth Stood Still" in 2008. His star role came in the remake of 1984's "The Karate Kid." He will appear with his dad again May 31 in the film " After Earth."
Like his father, Jaden is also taking his turn at rapping. He released his first rap mixtape, "The Cool Café" last October.
