A Texas firefighter and military veteran was fatally shot by his neighbor on Monday after she thought he was trying to break into her home, Fox Houston reported.
The victim was identified as Samuel Keen, 27, who lived next door to the woman. According to Mayor Annise Parker, Keen took a cab home after drinking and tried to get inside of the wrong house.
"No one did anything wrong. It was just a confluence of events that provoked a tragedy," Parker said. "My understanding is that the firefighter, off-duty, had been out. He did what he was supposed to do: he took a cab ride home, got dropped off in the wrong place and wasn't aware of it. Tried to get into what he thought was his house and was tragically shot."
Police said the neighbor -- whose name has not been released -- heard something outside around 9:30 p.m. When she saw a man by her home, she told him to leave and warned him that she had a gun.
The woman told deputies that he didn't listen and tried to get inside of the house, prompting her to fire through the front door and call 911.
Keen was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
"I know he has a wife. And so I'm just kind of, we're here to support her and do whatever we can to kind of help them through this process," said HFD Chief Terry Garrison. "But it's, it's a travesty. Whether we lose a firefighter on duty or off-duty we lose a member of our family."
