Chicago rapper Chief Keef was arrested earlier this month for allegedly driving under the influence of marijuana in north suburban Highland Park, according to NBC News.
Police pulled over the rapper whose real name is Keith Cozart at about 12:40 a.m. March 5 in the 2600 block of Skokie Valley Road after officers noticed he had an expired registration on his 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee, police said, NBC News reported.
When police approached the car, they noticed Cozart seemed impaired by drugs, and that they could smell burnt marijuana coming from inside of his car, authorities said, according to NBC News.
Cozart later failed a sobriety test and was taken into police custody, officials said, NBC News reported. He was charged with one count each of driving under the influence of drugs, driving without a valid driver's license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and having an expired registration, police said.
He was held on a $3,000 bond and was released later that morning after posting bail, police said, NBC News reported.
Cozart recently spent time in California serving a 90-day, court-mandated rehab sentence after he pleaded guilty last year to testing positive for drugs while on probation, according to NBC News. His arraignment on the DUI charge is 9 a.m. April 11 at the Waukegan courthouse, police said.
The Englewood-born Cozart, who has a Northbrook residence in his name, pleaded guilty in November to a conditional discharge violation after he tested positive twice for drugs following a series of skirmishes with the law, NBC News reported.
Those run-ins include a traffic arrest in May in which he was clocked driving 110 mph on the Edens Expressway, according to NBC News. He was sentenced to 18 months probation, then served 20 days in jail for failing a previous drug test.
He was sentenced to 60 days in juvenile detention last year for violating probation on a gun conviction when he wielded a firearm in a music video, NBC News reported.
