Two men driving a car full of explosives were arrested in Kenya on Monday, ABC News reported.
The Twitter account of the Kenya National Disaster Operations Centre uploaded a post on Monday night that said authorities from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit detained the men in the Changamwe area of Mombasa.
According to BBC News, one man was of Kenyan origin and the other was Somalian. Authorities claim they were planning an attack in an unspecified region.
"We have not established where the target was, but we have detained two terror suspects who were in the vehicle," said Henry Ondiek of the Mombasa Criminal Investigation Department.
"We were tipped off that the two were headed for an attack on an unspecified place and we laid an ambush."
In the vehicle, police found two homemade bombs and a cell phone, which they believe could have been used as a detonator.
In September, members of the Somalia-based al Shabaab launched a deadly attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, killing 67 people and injuring hundreds more. According to BBC, more than 100 people had appeared in court by February under suspicion of involvement with the terror organization.
Al Shabaab, which is affiliated with Al Qaeda, carried out attacks on Kenyans in response to their military presence in Somalia.
