The third person injured in an accident last week at Austin's South by Southwest festival has died, according to Texas police officials who spoke to CNN.
Austin Police spokesperson Veneza Bremner confirmed that 26-year-old Sandy Thuy Le died this week. A representative from the family told CNN that Le's next-of-kin were by her hospital bed when she passed away on Monday morning.
Le's brother-in-law Stuart Gates, who called Sandy a "free spirit," said their family has experienced quite a lot of loss in the past few years. According to CNN, the Pass Christian, Miss. family first lost their home to Hurricane Katrina, then the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill hurt their shrimping business.
Le was just one of three people who were killed at the music festival in Texas, after a driver who plowed through a crowd while drunk ran over a group of people and hit some cars nearby. More than 23 other people sustained injuries after the event.
Police reportedly caught 21-year-old Rashad Charjuan Owens after they chased him on foot and tasered him.
Owens was charged with two counts of capital murder last week. Texas police said Owens did not stop the vehicle he was driving when a police officer told him to pull over during the event.
Most of the victims, some of whom sustained numerous internal wounds, are in their early 20s, medical director at the University Medical Center Brackenridge Dr. Christopher Ziebell told CNN.
The identities of the two other deceased have not yet been released, CNN reported.
An eyewitness at the festival named Pablo Vasquenz told New Day that the car just missed him.
"I was less than a foot away," he said. "I saw some folks die."
Another bystander named Russ Barone told CNN reporters that it seemed like "something out of a movie."
"A few people lying on the street...with their friends around them trying to get them up, trying to get them back to life. Hopefully, they are," he said.
