An outrage has erupted online over a small studio apartment in New York City.

This cramped living space, which lacks essentials such as a bathroom, kitchen, and running water, has sparked intense criticism.

Smallest NYC Apartment

The shockingly high monthly rent of $1,200 is charged for this apartment-like property. After listing agent Alexander Bruni posted a video of the 54 square-foot "tiny" rental on TikTok, the video went viral. The apartment is located in Midtown West.

The small apartment measures nine-by-six and provides a snug space for a bed. Nevertheless, the absence of running water means that residents have to leave their studio and make use of the shared bathroom located down the hallway.

Viewers have expressed outrage over the video from inside the space, with some arguing that such living conditions should be deemed unacceptable, especially considering the rent cost associated with it.

Alexander gave viewers a virtual tour of the micro-apartment in a video posted on TikTok, which has now garnered over 2.8 million views. He said, "Today, I will be showing to you the smallest apartment that currently exist in New York City."

Upon entering the small area, he exclaimed, "Yes, this is real, this exists."

"This is very real. It's nine by six. You have a closet. It's real. But no space for anything besides a bed."

The listing agent tried to defend the price of the micro-rental by pointing out that many college students pay higher fees to live in dorms outside of New York City.

"Okay, but in reality all jokes aside to college. Whatever town you were going to college in, you were probably paying $1,200 at least for thew dorms there. You were not paying to live in New York City that's for sure."

According to him, despite its small and unattractive appearance, the unit offers the opportunity to live in New York City at an affordable price.

Alexander mentioned that each unit in the building was equally compact. He then proceeded to showcase the shared bathroom, which featured both a toilet and a shower.

Many individuals voiced their frustration in the comments section, expressing strong disapproval of the apartment and questioning its presence in the market.

According to a report, New York City rents reached a record high last year, with an average of $5,588 per month in July. This marked a 30% increase since 2019 and a 9% increase from the previous year, when the average rent was $5,113.

Despite a decline in the city's population since the pandemic, the cost of renting an apartment in Manhattan remains exorbitant.

According to US Census data, the borough's population has seen a significant decline of 400,000 between June 2020 and June 2022. Despite some signs of recovery, experts suggest that the population is still below its 2019 levels. The average monthly rent has increased by 9 percent compared to last year, reaching a new record for the city.

According to a recent report from Miller Samuel and Douglas Elliman, there has been a significant increase in median rent, reaching $4,400 per month. Additionally, the median price per square foot has also reached a new record of $84.74. Last June, a different unit without a bathroom was listed for rent at $2,350 per month.

A tiny 77-square-foot apartment in New York City, located in the sought-after Greenwich Village, recently caused quite a stir with potential renters. Despite its lack of a bathroom, the apartment managed to fetch a monthly rent of $2,350 after a fierce bidding war.

The third-floor rental on West 11th Street gained significant attention on TikTok in December when real estate agent Omer Labock showcased the compact space, describing it as the smallest apartment he had encountered. Back then, the monthly listing price was $1,975.

In July, the price of a studio apartment in Manhattan averaged at $3,278, while a three-bedroom apartment came in at $10,673.
