Lauryn Hill Back in Court for Tax Evasion Sentencing; Releases New Song (LISTEN)

Grammy-award winning singer Lauryn Hill is back in court Monday for her tax evasion sentencing. According to NBC News, Hill pleaded guilty for failing to pay federal taxes from 2005 to 2007. Hill did not pay taxes on $1.8 million and has only paid $50,000 of the $500,000 she owes.

The 37-year old singer has recently signed a recording deal with Sony that will help pay her taxes, The Associated Press reported. Hill faces up to a year in prison on three counts of tax evasion.

Over the weekend, the singer released new music on iTunes, much to the delight of her fans. Hill hasn't released much music since the debut of her first album in 1998. "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" won the hip-hop star five Grammy awards.

"Neurotic Society (Compulsory Mix)" is Hill's new track. The songwriter posted a link to the new song on her Tumblr page.

"Here is a link to a piece that I was 'required' to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline," Hill said. "I love being able to reach people directly, but in an ideal scenario, I would not have to rush the release of new music... but the message is still there."

Hill released new music after her former label mate, Chris Kelly of Kriss Kross, passed away

"I am even more pressed to YELL this to a multitude that may not understand the cost of allowing today's unhealthy paradigms to remain unchecked!"

For fans looking for a repeat to "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" will not find it in Hill's new release. Instead, the R&B singer raps over a hectic beat about the artistic struggle and what corporations force artists' to release. Hill seems to mirror her personal life in the song.

"This is an old conflict between art and commerce... free minds, and minds that are perhaps overly tethered to structure," she said. "This is about inequity, and the resulting disenfranchisement caused by it."
