Dove announced that they would be pulling their latest ad aimed at New Jersey women after it was labeled as offensive, the Daily Mail reports. The billboard was previewed Thursday, Feb. 27 and was set to launch in July as part of their new Advanced Care line.

The ad, which features a blonde woman showing off her underarm, reads: "Dear New Jersey, when people call you the 'Armpit of America,' take it as a compliment. Sincerely, Dove."

On Thursday, senior marketing director Matthew McCarthy told the New York Times that he didn't think people would find the ad offensive saying that it has a positive meaning behind it.

"The armpit is not a bad thing," he told the newspaper before the backlash. "And we stand for caring for the armpit."

"Women don't really see the skin of their underarms like the skin on the rest of their body," he added. "When they think about their underarms, they think mostly about odor and wetness."

However, women from the Garden State did find the ad offensive and flocked to the company's Twitter and Facebook pages to vent.

"As a Jersey girl, I have a difficult time seeing what @Dove says about New Jersey as a compliment #JerseyIs," @PiecesofaMom commented.

"thanks Dove for calling New Jersey a nice armpit????" @brenna_fallows posted.

"Sorry Dove, bad job," @dominictremblay wrote.

Following the backlash, Unilever, Dove's parent company, announced that the ad was being pulled and wouldn't be running this summer.

"Dove Deodorant never intended to upset the residents of the state," the statement posted to Facebook read. "As a result of your feedback, Dove Deodorant will not be moving forward with publishing or displaying this ad. Always, Dove."
