A rare blue diamond has been sold at a Christie's auction for around $44 million. This was announced by the world-leading art & luxury business on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

The Christie's auction was able to sell the 17.61-carat Bleu Royal diamond, which is described to be the largest internally flawless fancy vivid diamond to ever appear at auction. 

The organization presented the Bleu Royal this November in Geneva at Christie's Magnificent Jewels Auction. 

Rare Blue Diamond Sold for $44 Million at Christie's Auction!

According to Business Insider's latest report, Christie's sold the super rare blue diamond set in a ring for $43.8 million (39.505 million Swiss francs). 

"Weighing 17.61 carats, Bleu Royal is the largest Internally Flawless Fancy Vivid Blue gem ever to appear for sale in auction history," said the auction organization via its official website.

Christie's said that the blue diamond was cut and polished into a "perfectly symmetrical pear" with a rich vivid blue color, as well as flawless purity. The business claimed that the Bleu Royal is considered to be the rarest of its kind to be unearthed. 

"Bleu Royal has remained part of an important private collection for the past 50 years," added the company. 

Christie's International Head of Jewellery commented about the rare blue diamond, saying that it's "a true miracle of nature." He added that the Bleu Royal allows the auction firm to continue its 257-year-long history of offering the world's rarest gemstones.

A blue diamond is a real, natural gemstone that is noticeable for its blue tone; the presence of boron in the diamond's carbon structure allows this rare gem to have this color. 

Scientists said that blue diamonds are estimated to have formed beneath the earth's surface over billions of years. Blue diamonds have different hue ranges, such as green-blue, blue, violet-blue, and gray-blue. 

Because it is so hard to find, just a 0.3-carat light blue diamond costs $15,700 on average. Just imagine what 10-carat and up costs. Also, the darker the color intensity, the more expensive it gets.
