The cultures of China and the United States have many differences. The way Chinese and Americans dress, enter the house, and prepare their food are definitely not similar.

This is why Chinese and American residents are confused about why the other side does this and that. Now, Chinese social media users are questioning how Americans continue to eat European meals.

The #WhitePeopleFood trend began in May; with Chinese netizens sharing videos and photos of American meals they see.

One of these viral posts shows a train passenger in Switzerland pulling lettuce leaves from a bag. The lady layered the vegetables with ham and mustard to make a sandwich.

"Is there anything more 'white people food' than this?" said the Chinese netizen who posted the video.

Although many Chinese residents are dissatisfied with American-style meals, some people in China are good with them since European food can be prepared easily, especially during their work breaks.

Gao Duan, a 30-year-old Chinese resident who has been eating American food for over six months, said that European meals are convenient to eat in the office since they don't have a strong smell.

"There is no point eating good food in the workplace because food should be divine and enjoyed properly," added Duan.

American Vs. Chinese Food

There are numerous reasons why Chinese residents don't like American-style food. These include the lack of flavor since European meals commonly consist of bread, vegetables, fruits, ham, etc.

Unlike Americans, people in China are used to eating cooked food. They even spend a lot of time cooking their meals; using many spices to make them more flavorful.

Aside from meal preparation, Business Insider provided other differences between American-style and Chinese food:

  • China has more ingredients compared to the U.S. These include soy sauce, plum sauce, star anise, lotus pods, etc.
  • While Americans are used to eating raw food, Chinese prefer their meals to be cooked.
  • In China, residents commonly eat food that doesn't contain many dairy products, which is the opposite in the U.S. since Americans love milk and cheese.
  • Donuts and other desserts in the United States are usually very sweet. On the other hand, desserts in China are not.
