An American ex-pat was detained by local police in Cavite, Philippines, on Tuesday, May 9, on suspicion of murdering his Filipina live-in partner and disposing of her remains in a plastic barrel, Rappler reported.

Filipina Slain by American

According to a report filed by Colonel Christopher Olazo, head of the Cavite Provincial Police Office, the corpse of 48-year-old Mila Loslos was discovered inside a blue barrel at her home. The victim's body was wrapped in a trash bag and secured with duct tape.

American national William Thomas Worth, 71, was taken into custody by police at the residence of the victim in Brgy. Habay 1, Bacoor City, at around 1:30 PM local time on Tuesday.

The victim's son, 21-year-old Las Piñas resident Nino Jay Loslos, reportedly contacted police in Bacoor after discovering his mother missing. The last time he saw his mother was on May 5, four days since the report.

Nino Jay followed the advice of the police in Bacoor and went to his mother's roommate in search of information about her location.

According to Nino Jay, the suspect was located at his own residence. When he questioned Worth about his mother, the latter said he was unaware of her whereabouts.

However, the unpleasant smell that filled the home heightened the son's suspicions. He returned to the police station and made a request for assistance.

The criminal act was uncovered by Nino Jay's accompanying police force. After investigating, the Cavite Provincial Forensic Unit found three knives and a nylon rope at the site of the crime. The suspect also had injuries all over his body, according to the officials.

The police have said that an autopsy will be performed on the victim's corpse to ascertain the cause of death.

Bacoor law enforcement has taken Worth into custody to formally prosecute him soon. The police contacted the US Embassy for assistance with the investigation.

According to CBS News, a representative for the US Embassy in Manila told AFP, "We are aware of this case. Due to US Privacy Act considerations, we cannot provide any further information."

Comparable Case

This crime may sound familiar and similar to the 2014 Jennifer Laude case, but not exactly. A few years back, a US Marine was convicted of murdering a transgender Filipina in a hotel room.

Lance Cpl. Joseph Scott Pemberton, 20 years old at the time, was convicted guilty of murder for choking and drowning 26-year-old Jennifer Laude in a hotel bathroom toilet. Pemberton, who was on shore leave in Olongapo City for joint military exercises, murdered Laude one night in October 2014 after discovering she was transgender.

The murder sparked demonstrations by transgender rights activists and others in the Philippines.
