Following the president's inspection of Hurricane Ian's storm damage in Florida on Wednesday, Joe Biden and Governor Ron DeSantis presented a united front as they shook hands and stood face to face for the first time.

President Joe Biden visited Florida to witness firsthand the devastation brought on by Hurricane Ian, bringing attention once more to his tense relationship with Gov. Ron DeSantis, the combative Republican leader who is rumored to be the Democrat's potential opponent in the 2024 presidential election.

Since the hurricane's catastrophic collision with Florida's west coast, Biden and DeSantis' administrations have cooperated, putting their on-the-ramp political competition on hold for the time being. This was demonstrated on Wednesday.

Biden-DeSantis Florida Meeting

Gov. Ron DeSantis and his wife, Casey, met President Joe Biden at Fisherman's Wharf shortly after the president had taken a helicopter tour of the hurricane-damaged Gulf Coast villages. There, they engaged in a lengthy conversation amidst the debris.

After making a joint appearance a little while later, Joe Biden and Ron DeSantis stressed to reporters that despite frequent disagreements, their two governments are closely collaborating on the rescue and recovery efforts. Biden praised the amazing level of cooperation, stressed the willingness of Americans nationwide to lend a hand in times of need, and urged Floridians to one day repay the favor.

Later, Biden told reporters that DeSantis had done a tremendous job leading Florida through this crisis and called the Republican response pretty exceptional. In the wake of a tragedy, Biden and DeSantis have welcomed a brief truce twice in the previous week.

Biden and DeSantis sat together in a public act of bipartisan sorrow a week after a condo tower in Surfside, Florida collapsed last year, killing 98 people. In front of the cameras, they exchanged pleasantries, with Biden giving DeSantis a warm arm pat, as per CNN.

Biden's trip to Florida to assess the hurricane damage was thanked by DeSantis, who also praised the excellent cooperation between his administration and the White House. DeSantis commended the federal government's decision to extend the period during which it will cover all expenditures associated with debris removal and other expenses from 30 days to 60 days.

The governor claimed that the expense of debris removal would exceed some cities' entire budgets. DeSantis will most likely need to request another extension, according to Biden.

After viewing the storm damage from the air and receiving information about the recovery efforts, Biden claimed that he had given his administration the go-ahead to assemble every aspect of the federal government to assist with both short-term needs and long-term rebuilding.

Biden Vows More Support to Help Florida

Reporters questioned Biden on DeSantis' handling of the hurricane response after he had finished speaking. On Wednesday, immediately after landing in Fort Myers, Biden flew in a chopper over areas of Florida that had been affected by hurricanes.

Federal, state, and local officials will next brief the public at the debris-strewn Fisherman's Wharf, followed by a meeting with residents and small business owners, according to USA Today. Biden vowed additional funding to aid Florida in recovering from the category four hurricane when he visits the state.

More than 4 million households and businesses in Florida as well as over 1.1 million in North and South Carolina lost power as a result of the hurricane. In recent years, partisanship between the White House and governors of the opposing party has broken down when it comes to federal assistance for states.

Republican governors Chris Christie of New Jersey and Charlie Crist of Florida, whose states had also been devastated by natural disasters at the time, received handshakes and hugs from Barack Obama. The hug destroyed Crist's political career and hurt Christie, who is now a Democrat against DeSantis in 2022.

DeSantis doesn't have to be concerned that Biden's visit will undermine his GOP influence and popularity because his political strategy concentrates on criticizing far-left initiatives. With fewer than five weeks until the midterm elections, the president and the governor were able to speak with each other on the phone and complement each other in a rare display of cooperation, Daily Mail reported.
