Former South Carolina Rep. Joe Cunningham says President Joe Biden should step down because he is too old to run for reelection.

Former Democratic Rep. and South Carolina gubernatorial candidate Joe Cunningham stated on Thursday that he does not believe former President Biden should run again in 2024 owing to his age.

The one-term lawmaker had recently released an advertisement arguing for age limitations in government. The 40-year-old gubernatorial contender also suggested that House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, who is 81, retire. He mentioned that in South Carolina judges must retire at the age of 72, as per Daily Mail.

Joe Biden Urges To Seek Reelection

Biden has stated his intention to run again, and Democrats are discreetly preparing for a presidential fight without the incumbent on the ticket. The prospect of who would succeed Biden at the head of the Democratic ticket is bleak since his deputy, Kamala Harris, is plagued by poor poll numbers. Her own 2020 presidential candidacy fizzled fairly swiftly.

Meanwhile, Americans aren't overjoyed about another Biden run. According to a May Rasmussen survey, 61% do not believe the president should pursue a second term. It's unusual for a president to step down after only one term; only six have ever done so.

President Joe Biden's age came under renewed criticism earlier this month when the New York Times reported a combination of rank-and-file Democrats and top politicians citing worries about the matter as the midterm elections approached.

The front-page discussion of the topic that haunted Biden, 79, during his most recent presidential campaign comes amid poor approval ratings and Democratic worries that he remains vulnerable to a restoration push by former President Donald Trump.

According to Fox News, Democratic strategists and mainstream media analysts have lately began to discuss Biden's age as a potential issue in the 2024 presidential race. Cunningham also advocated for age and term limitations for state and national politicians in his campaign video.

Why Does President Joe Biden's Age Matter in 2024 Election?

President Joe Biden can't avoid inquiries about his age, which is prompting some Democrats to wonder if he can seriously compete for reelection in 2024 when he would be 81 years old. Conversations that were formerly murmured in secret are now seeping out into the open as the party fears a beating in this fall's midterm elections and faces fundamental concerns about its future two years later.

Biden's favor ratings haven't recovered from a slump late last summer, inflation is now sky high, and fears of a recession are mounting. Some Democrats have openly questioned if the party needs a different younger leader in the next presidential election.

Other polls, although not focusing on the president's age, provide similarly dismal news for Team Biden. According to a YouGov and Yahoo poll released this week, 64% of those polled do not want Biden to run for president again.

One Biden associate who routinely speaks to White House staff said that Biden "looks old and seems elderly, and that's not a good look for the White House." The president has received praise from his supporters for handling Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the coronavirus outbreak.

On inflation and rising gas costs, the two factors doing the most havoc on Democrats, there is a widespread belief that fate has dealt Biden an unpleasant electoral hand. These voices point out that Biden's steady hand was considered a net benefit less than two years ago when he won the Democratic primary and presidential election over former President Trump.

One senior House member voiced a strong wish for Biden to run again, hoping for more achievements to brag about to voters. Other Democrats, though, believe it is permissible to have an open discussion about Biden's impending 80th birthday. The Republican Party has made it obvious that it will exploit Biden's age against him, even though its leading presidential candidate, Donald Trump, is only 76 years old, The Hill reported.
