A voluntary recall has been issued for Big Red Tomatoes, after the risk of a salmonella contamination surfaced.
About 790 of Big Red Tomato Packers' 20-to 25-pound cases of fresh tomatoes were recalled on Friday, according to a report by UPI.
The tomatoes were sent to distributors in Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Michigan, Minnesota, Flordia and North Carolina. UPI reported the recipients of the shipment, which all came from lot 1106, were notified of the potentially sullied tomatoes.
Big Red Tomato Packers first heard word of the salmonella threat on Jan. 28, after officials took a random sample from the lot.
The company stated that it is "currently reviewing all policies and procedures associated with food safety to minimize any future occurrence."
Salmonella, an organism that can lead to harmful infections in people with weak or compromised immune systems, is the largest cause of food poisoning in the U.S.
UPI reported that cooking or pasteurizing ingredients, in addition to "avoiding raw and lightly cooked foods," are surefire ways to avoid a salmonella outbreak.
No reports of illnesses from the tomatoes have circulated yet, according to UPI.
