A Michigan teen father is sentenced up to 10 years in prison Tuesday for physically abusing his 20-days-old son, last year.

David Steiger, 19, was arrested July 2, 2013 and was charged with first-degree child abuse after doctors found 19 broken bones in baby Jaxon last summer. According to Fox News, the Grand Rapids native pleaded no contest to the child abuse charge on Jan. 13 in a Kent County courtroom. Steiger has now been sentenced between three and half years and10 years in prison.

During police interrogations, Steiger gave numerous conflicting statements as to why his baby was discovered with 19 broken bones.

Last July, Steiger told police that Jaxon fell from the couch. But later admitted that he "could" be responsible for the baby's broken bones and that he could not recollect anything as he was blacked out.

Police said Steiger later confessed that he pushed his son's legs so hard that it made "pop" sound. The authorities said that the sound might be Jaxon's femur and tibia breaking.

However, Steiger admitted that he did not intentionally harm his baby and the bones might have broken during changing Jaxon's diaper.

"When I was changing his diaper, and he crosses his legs up and brings them up to his chest and I was kind of pushing his legs down to put the, strap the diaper up, and I thought like, it was just like me popping my finger, but I guess not, his little leg just popped," Steiger said, reports the Examiner.

During the sentence hearing, Chelsi Knop, Jaxon's mother pleaded the judge to give psychological help to her divorced husband. Knop divorced Steiger last October.
