California High School Principal Apologizes for Black History Month-Themed Lunch Menu Including Fried Chicken and Watermelon

Administrators from an all-girls Catholic school in the San Francisco Bay Area issued a formal apology on Thursday, after offering a Black History Month-themed menu of fried chicken and watermelon.

Carondelet High School principal Nancy Libby issued an official statement expressing regret over the decision to feature the school lunch, which also included cornbread.

"I'd like to apologize for the announcement and any hurt this caused students, parents or community members," Libby wrote. "Please know that at no time at Carondelet do we wish to perpetrate racial stereotypes."

Parents and students alike were outraged after they caught wind of the fact that the schools' administrators decided the menu would be a good way to celebrate Black History Month.

According to NBC Bay Area, some members of the school's Black Student Union told Libby that the watermelon should be removed from the menu. Libby subsequently decided to scrap the chicken and cornbread as well.

Libby also wrote in the letter that the school would host a diversity event for administrators and students.
