A suburban Denver teen was released from a hostage situation after police shot the man thought to be holding the young boy captive.
After a standoff that lasted almost 18 hours, law enforcement officials managed to shoot the suspect and move the 13-year-old boy out of the house where he was being held.
According to Arvada Police Chief Don Wick, the boy made it out unharmed. It's unclear whether the suspect sustained life-threatening injuries, died, or otherwise.
Police spent hours negotiating with the man who reportedly held the teen hostage in the home, located just seven miles northwest of Denver, in the city of Arvada. According to CBS Denver, the suspect took the child at about 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
Police told Wick that they first received calls of a domestic issue happening between a male and female. The man reportedly left the house where the argument was happening, pushed his way into another residence close by, and grabbed the 13-year-old boy, who was at home by himself.
The teen's brother and mom came to the scene of the hostage-taking shortly thereafter.
Arvada Police tweeted on Tuesday morning that they were still trying to get the boy out of the house.
"We are talking to suspect & working hard to end peacefully," officials wrote at the time.
Police later posted on Twitter that the suspect didn't know the hostage. Police moved some neighbors out of their homes as a safety precaution, the Denver Post reported.
According to state officials, the man who took the teen hostage could be on parole, but that fact hasn't yet been confirmed.
