George Zimmerman's estranged wife Shellie requested a Florida judge grant her a divorce without word from her ex-husband, who has reportedly failed to answer her attempts to sever the marriage.
26-year-old Shellie officially filed for divorce on Sept. 5, the Orlando Sentinel reported, but Zimmerman hasn't yet responded with any filing of his own.
Despite still being legally married, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who shot and killed teenager Trayvon Martin is currently dating Florida resident Samantha Scheibe, who is reportedly pregnant with his child.
According to state law, a citizen must respond to a divorce filing within 20 days. Zimmerman was served on Dec. 18 - he was serving at the time in Seminole County jail on a domestic violence case with Scheibe, according to the Sentinel.
When Shellie Zimmerman's attorney Kelly Sims received no word back, Sims filed for a default, meaning the judge can regard Shellie's testimony as truthful, and proceed with the case regardless of Zimmerman's cooperation.
Shellie and George Zimmerman don't have children or own property together. Shellie is requesting full custody of their dogs Leroy and Oso. She's also detailed around $13,000 in assets and almost $104,000 in debts, the Sentinel reported.
George, meanwhile, listed in a recent court document about $2.5 million in debts, mostly accrued during his multiple, lengthy trials. A large part of the money will go toward legal fees for attorneys Don West and Mark O'Mara.
"The next step is for me to request a trial," Sims told the Sentinel. "I know nothing about his finances. I don't even know where he lives. I can't get a bead on him...I want to move forward and get them divorced."
