Man Plummets 12,000 Ft. Out Of The Sky, Crashes And Lives In Skydiving Accident

A British man is on the mend in a hospital after falling 12,000 feet out of the sky in a botched skydiving attempt.

Ben Cornick, 31, jumped from a plane flying over Fiji in the South Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, Jan. 14 the Daily Mirror reported. Cornick lost control of his parachute, which was specially made for advanced skydivers, and crashed into a parked van on the road. The diver broke his left arm and fractured his elbow and his right thigh bone in three places. He also damaged his kneecap.

Cornick, a veteran skydiver of more than 1,000 times, crashed into the van at approximately 40 mph.

"The operation on Sunday night on his legs was a success," the diver's mother, Ellie Harrison, told Wales Online. "He's had a rod put through his femur and he's in traction."

Harrison said her son's accident was her "worst nightmare."

"He will have another operation tomorrow morning on his arm," Harrison told Wales Online. "It is a bit more complicated for surgeons because he's also completely shattered his elbow. It's horrendous, but he's lucky to be alive."

The Ben Cornick Donation Page had over 6,700 members as of Thursday. The family is still accepting donation to fly Cornick home.
