Bouchard, ranked No. 31 in the World, is appearing in the Aussie Open semifinals for the first time. Wednesday's match against Li also marks the furthest round the Canadian has ever reached in a Grand Slam.
The 19-year-old hasn't been a pro for long. Bouchard became a full-time WTA pro in 2013, and she credits the extra time spent in the juniors for helping her transition.
"Winning junior Wimbledon (2012) gave me a lot of confidence," Bouchard said after her fourth-round win, via Sports Illustrated. "Right away I transitioned into the pros really well. So I don't know. A year and a half is a long time, too. It's not something that surprises me."
She also credits her coach, Nathalie Tauziat, for helping improve her game.
"Just in this past offseason I was working on my serve, trying to hit a bigger serve, bigger shots," said Bouchard. "For sure, you need to have weapons on the pro tour. Just trying to work on them, get them better, as well as the mental side, just trying to be tough in the matches."
Bouchard may have to use everything in her arsenal when she meets World No. 4 Li in the semis. The 31-year-old veteran has dropped only one set en route to Wednesday's match.
Li also has the advantage of experience over Bouchard. Li has eight WTA titles, including the 2011 French Open, and she's reached the Australian Open final twice before.
The two women met in the second round of the 2012 Rogers Cup, where Li won in two sets.
