A California mother gave birth to a 15-pound, 2-ounce child on Thursday.
Hesperia resident Vanessa Cervantez told the Victorville Daily Press that doctors were completely shocked by the heft of the newborn.
"They had to double check, because I didn't believe them," the mother, just 5-foot 1-inch tall said incredulously. "None of the doctors have ever delivered or heard of a baby being born that big here."
Andrew Jacob Cervantez wasn't the largest child ever born, but he could be the heaviest baby in the state of California's history. Measuring 2-feet long, Andrew was delivered via emergency C-section at the Desert Valley Hospital, located in Southern California's San Bernardino County, according to a report from USA Today.
Initial tests showed the child wasn't moving normally. At almost 38 weeks old, the baby was experiencing trouble breathing, so he was immediately transferred to Loma Linda University Children's Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, USA Today reported.
28-year-old Vanessa reportedly gave birth to two other heavy kids - her first son topped out at 10 pounds, 10 ounces, and her daughter was 9 pounds, 14 hours when she was born.
The heaviest baby of all time was a 23-pound, 12-ounce child born in Canada 135 years ago.
