Nestle announced they will be launching Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups, their first new product in five years, with a Super Bowl ad which will feature peanut butter and chocolate as a couple going to therapy, according to the Associated Press.
Teasers for the ad have already been released two weeks before the Super Bowl game as Nestle hopes to garner a fan base against the market leader in peanut butter cups, Reeses, the AP reported.
Due to the high number of viewers who tune each year to watch the Super Bowl, and the commercials, the last game of the playoffs has become a popular "launching pad" for new products , according to the AP.
According to Jeremy Vandervoet, the brand manager for Butterfinger, awareness for a new product is essential, so "what better way to do that than with a Super Bowl ad," the AP reported.
After developing their new peanut butter cup over the past two-and-a-half years, the brand is finally ready to premier the product through a platform which is also new to them: the Super Bowl, according to the AP.
The Butterfinger teaser feature a couple, probably symbolizing the traditional smooth peanut butter and chocolate mix Reeses is famous for, as they wait in a couple therapy office, the AP reported. The man is wearing a shirt which reads "peanut butter" while the woman's shirt says "chocolate."
The waiting room in the couple therapy's office is filled without coupled foods like fish and chips and oatmeal and raisin.
A cheese and cracker couple walk out of the doctors office holding a piece of salami as the woman playing chocolate says "Don't you think it would be nice to try something new and crunchy?" as the tagline reads: "The cup is about to get crunchy."
In the past, commercials would be kept a secret by advertisers until the day of the Super Bowl, but it has become increasingly popular to release a short clip or teaser hinting at the ad and its content, the AP reported.
Butterfinger's actual Super Bowl ad will not be released until the Super Bowl but it will most likely follow the couple therapy theme, according to the AP.
Other advertisers have also began to leak some teasers and hints, the AP reported. Jaguar will also be featuring an ad on Super Bowl for the first time for their new F-Type coupe, and the company has also released a teaser featuring Ben Kingsley as a British villain. Scarlett Johansson will also be featured promoting SodaStream soda makers and Stephen Colbert will be shown in ad for Wonderful Pistachios.
