Vavle is becoming one of the biggest stars of this year's CES 2014 in Las Vegas thanks to many third-party manufacturers developing their own Steam Machines. The company has been working to get into the hardware game for the latter half of 2013 with the hope of creating a gaming console that will be able to seamlessly take games designed for PC gaming and transport them into the living room for a typical console experience.
Valve was expected to debut a Steam Machine of its very own design to display at the Consumer Electronics Show. However, the company has announced that it will not be releasing its own version of the Steam Machine, with Valve co-founder Gabe Newell saying it looks at itself more as a catalyst for its hardware partners.
"We're going to continue to make that decision as we go along," Newell said. "We've been happy with the results of doing hardware development with clients. We have plans to build more machines, but we also expect that users will be really happy with the range of offerings from these hardware manufacturers."
According to IGN, Valve has already made a handful of its own Steam Machines but has no plans to release these prototypes to the public.
"I mean, we've made 300 [machines], which is a very tiny step," Newell said. "We'll make what we need to. We really view our role in this as enabling. So we'll do whatever is going to be helpful to other hardware manufacturers - whether that's with controller design or building specific kinds of boxes."
