Mental Health Patient Escapes South Carolina Hospital, Found In Tennessee Hotel (VIDEO)

Jason Carter, a mental health patient who was committed after murdering both his parents in 2006, escaped from a South Carolina hospital on Thursday morning and was found in a hotel in Tennessee on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

Carter stole a van from a working facility affiliated with the G. Werber Bryan Psychiatric Hospital where he was committed after the courts found him unfit to stand trial, Oconee County Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Watt said, according to Reuters.

Police believed he traveled the entire way in a stolen white van, but shortly after escaping Carter managed to purchase a Chevrolet Lumina, according to CNN.

Department of Mental Health officials say Carter did not commit any other crimes besides escaping though they are unaware of where he got the money to pay for the car and hotel off Interstate 40 west of Nashville where authorities spotted his car around 7 a.m. on Friday, the AP reported.

Carter, 39, is accused of killing his mother and stepfather, wrapping their bodies in plastic and locking them in a basement in South Carolina where he ate and slept with them for the next three days, according to authorities, Reuters reported.

According to Watt, police "found the bodies of Kevin and Debra Ann Perkins inside a locked room in the basement with Carter inside with the victims," Reuters reported. Carter allegedly does not remember anything about the murders and was found not guilty by reason of insanity and then hospitalized.

Local law enforcement reported Carter was working at one of the hospital's campuses 115 miles northwest of Charleston when he escaped, according to CNN affiliate WISTV, Reuters reported.
