Smart Home Tech: The Nest smart home thermostat got the ball rolling with the ability to control one's home environment with a simple web-connected appliance. Granted, Nest was not the first of its kind and it won't be the last. Now there are cameras that can monitor your home form your smartphone and locks that can be controlled the same way. It won't be long before the standard practice in homes is to have an environment that can be completely controlled my your personal device, be it a smartwatch or smartphone. Speaking of which.
Smartwatches: The Galaxy Gear smartwatch from Samsung got things started. All the most common functions on your smartphone can now be done from a wearable wrist accessory. It can even take phone calls. Samsung wasn't the first tech company to produce a smartwatch but it is one of the biggest, and by pairing it with its immensely popular lineup of Galaxy smartphones, the South Korean Tech giant has fired the first shot in what could be the 2014 smartwatch war. It's biggest rival, Apple, is reportedly working on a device called the iWatch to help track fitness and augment the iPhone. Start preparing your wrist now, smartwatches are about to hit us hard.
Cloud Storage: The desktop PC will continue to experience a downturn as consumers start to embrace cloud storage more and more. Consequently, they'll soon need more than the standard 5-20GB standard on most mobile devices.
Amazon, Apple, Microsoft and Google will get serious about marketing and advertising cloud storage as the typical consumer begins to understand the potential in cloud storage. However, as Mashable notes, this could also spark a price-per-gigabyte war. Prepare for more education on cloud storage in the New Year.
