"Saving Mr. Banks" has officially hit theaters and the film based on the making of beloved movie "Mary Poppins" delights both critics and audiences.
Tom Hanks plays Walt Disney and Emma Thompson takes on the role of P.L. Travers in the film. The movie follows the untold story about how Disney's daughter asked him to make a film adaption of her favorite novel "Mary Poppins". Check out what reviewers had to say about the "Saving Mr. Banks" below, and to watch the trailer as well.
Philly.com gives the film 3 out of 4 stars:
"'Saving Mr. Banks', set in 1961, is smart, delightful. Its sappier back-story revelations are ameliorated by Thompson's pitch-perfect performance - a stubborn woman who finally succumbs to the backlot magic orchestrated (with the best intentions) by Uncle Walt. Thompson is made up, and dressed up, to be prim and elegant, and her response to Disney's relentless wooing remains steadfastly cool."
The Detroit News grades the film a "B" at best:
"'Saving Mr. Banks' is a perfectly pleasant little movie, but don't bring the kids. Not that anything racy goes on - this is a film about the making of 'Mary Poppins,' after all. But it's hard to imagine most youngsters getting excited about a movie involving the making of an old movie.
"No, the target audience here is assumedly baby boomers who enjoyed "Mary Poppins" when it came out and who may harbor warm feelings for the man behind its creation, Walt Disney. Uncle Walt (played with expected warmth by Tom Hanks) comes across as a heck of a nice guy here. But then again, this is a Disney movie."
RottonTomatoes.com audience reviewers certify the film fresh at 90 percent:
"'Saving Mr. Banks'. Very, very special. No expectations going in, floored on every count. Hit me harder emotionally than anything this year. A super ensemble, glorious words and plain good storytelling. The relationship between Emma Thompson and Paul Giamatti is a cliched one that manages to rise above its simplicity into greatness," user c0up wrote.
