Apple's Top Apps of 2013: Candy Crush and Minecraft Top The Charts for Unpaid and Paid Downloads

Apple has released the statistics for the iTunes and App Stores for 2013 and it seems this year that the most addicting apps were games with the top free and top paid downloads being games you can tinker with.

For apps that require no money, Candy Crush Saga took the win for the most downloaded app. The smash hit game that millions and millions of people have played on subways, waiting in line at the bank or just lounging around the house with some down time has taken the country by storm. The game creates puzzles for the user to solve that, obviously, require you to crush candy.

According to USA Today, the game launched in Nov. of 2012 and has been available for free on the Apple App Store and for Android phones. The game has more than 500 million downloads and has been played more than 150 billion times.

As for games that cost a little bit of money to play, the world building game Minecraft topped the charts with its "pocket edition" of the game. Based on the computer version of the game, this popular paid-for app for iPhones and iPads allows the user to build whatever they want out of blocks.

Other apps to make the cut were Duolingo, a language-learning app. This was chosen as the iPhone app of the year, while Disney Animated, which allows users to learn how to customize and create cartoons in the Disney universe and bring those cartoons to life, has been named the best iPad app of the year. The selections were reportedly made by iTunes.
