Reese McKee, a 25-year-old man from Wellington, New Zealand, started a Facebook campaign last week to find a Washington D.C. girl he met for one night last New Year's Eve in Hong Kong.
Before McKee knew, it the search for the girl, named Katie, went viral.
"It turned into a massive 'let's stalk every Katie in the D.C. area,'" McKee told The New Zealand Herald. "I was trying to get people to stop that, but with 2,000 plus people messaging...it got a bit out of hand."
Katie was bombarded by so many of McKee's supporters who found her that she reportedly deleted all of her social media accounts. McKee gave up the search and deleted the Facebook page he set up to find her, saying he was "a little naïve," The New Zealand Herald reported.
Now, however, the Daily Mail reported Friday that the girl, 20-year-old Katie Capp, said she's interested in getting to know McKee.
The Daily Mail located Capp in a town in the south of France. Capp, a Georgetown University student originally from McLean Virginia, said a date with McKee is possible, but not definite.
"I haven't made up my mind yet about whether I like him or not," Capp, who is studying abroad at Paris' Sciences Po University, told the Daily Mail.
McKee met Capp when she was lost.
"I was just walking around and admiring the lights and found this girl just crying on the side of the road," McKee told The New Zealand Herald.
McKee said he tried to help her because she was separated from her friends.
"I just cheered her up," he said. "I sort of have this undeniably bad sense of humor that no one can resist laughing at."
They went drinking together all night but went their separate ways when Capp found her friends the next morning. All McKee had to find her was her photograph on his phone and her last words to him: "find me."
"I'm still waiting for him to get in touch," Capp told the Daily Mail. "I don't have a boyfriend. But I don't want to say anything until I've spoken to Reese. And he hasn't been in contact yet,"
