Mass Effect wrapped itself up as a trilogy, completely concluding Commander Shepard's story. However, the people are BioWare aren't yet finished with the expanded game universe and are hard at work to bring people a fourth game in the Mass Effect vein that will be removed from the original three games.
"Mass Effect 4" is the working title for the next entry in the game's universe but, so far, very little is known about the game such as release date, plot, official name and who the main protagonist will be.
According to IGN, what is known thus far about the game is that it will not star Commander Shepard as BioWare confirmed the news earlier this year. The thought behind the decision to not include Shepard is simply that the developers did a lot to wrap up that character's story line in the third game. As a result, to call the new game "Mass Effect 4," or to try and bring the character back, would be doing a disservice to both Shepard's storyline and whatever is to come in the next game.
Another small bit of information known about the game is that it will be borrowing a lot of key game systems from BioWare's other hit title "Dragon Age: Inquisition." That game is built on the same engine which means Mass Effect 4 could build off of it rather than starting form scratch. Unfortunately, the developers have made it clear that this will not result in the game being put out any faster.
Last month, BioWare tweeted a series of pictures for N7 Day (Nov. 7) when it typically takes the time to celebrate Mass Effect. The photos of the team of developer's hard at work can be found HERE via IGN.
