'Battlefield 5' Rumors: Developer DICE Leaks Plans for Newest Game; Is Story Taking a Back Seat?

DICE, the developer company behind the popular "Battlefield" franchise has said that it isn't planning on pushing out another installment of the game within a year of the release of "Battlefield 4." However, the developer does have some ideas as to what the fifth game will be like.

In an interview with the New York Times, DICE executives Patrick Soderlund and Patrick Bach talked about why they thing the series has been such a success so far and what needs to be done in the future in order to keep that success going.

"I hate to say this, but storytelling does not come naturally to Swedes," said Soderlund. "But we're good at designing systems, and that's what these games really are. Minecraft puts a box in front of you and says, 'Do whatever you want with it.' Battlefield is a system designed for entertainment rather than for telling you a story."

Bach continued this sentiment by adding: "The story is just the coating on the game. The game is now the experience of playing it," He went on to say that, although the game might lag in story, it will be unprecedented in terms of creating a great gameplay experience.

"More features. More extras. More destruction," he said. "Every new game needs to be the next big thing." The studio has had lofty goals for the franchise for a while. Unfortunately fans of the series will have to wait while DICE works on some of the other irons it has in the fire including "Mirror's Edge 2," "Star Wars: Battlefront," and there have been rumors that "Bad Company" will be coming back someday.

Battlefield 4 is available now on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4 and PC. It will be available on Xbox One as soon as the console is released this Friday.
