Texas is in a state of worry after a second defender of the law was possibly murdered over the weekend, according to CNN.
District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, were found dead in their Kaufman County home on Saturday. Many fear the Aryan Brotherhood, a white supremacist group, is responsible for the recent deaths of members of law enforcement. Authorities in Kaufman County and Harris County were a part of a task force that investigated the group in 2012.
McLelland is the second Kaufman County prosecutor who has been killed in the last three months. After the death of fellow prosecutor Mark Hasse, an assistant district attorney, McLelland vowed to the people responsible, that he'd “pull you out of whatever hole you’re in.”
When members of the white supremacist group were indicted in November, authorities said there was “credible information” that the brotherhood was making arrangements for revenge.
In the wake of what seems to be a devastating trend, Texas law officials are going into protective custody. According to a spokeswoman from the office of Harris County District Attorney Mike Anderson, officers have been stationed at the Anderson’s home and office.
The Kaufman County district attorney’s office is scheduled to remain closed on Monday. According to County Judge Bruce Wood, court will resume on Monday but the courthouse will be strongly guarded by security.
"We are all on heightened alert. There's no question about that," the judge said.
Rep. Ted Poe, R-Texas, said members of the communities affected by the killings are far from OK and “very concerned for their safety.”
"The law enforcement community here is very uncomfortable," said Pete Schulte, an attorney who has experience in Kaufman County. "It's really sending some shock waves through the community."
Texas authorities, as well as the Federal Bureau of Investigation continue to look into the deaths.
