In this day and age, when families go on vacation, it is no longer exclusive for people with two feet. As it turns out, more than half of pet owners in the U.S. take their dogs and cats with them when they travel around the country or the world, according to a study by AAA and Best Western International, The Huffington Post reported.

And as the holiday season draws near, there's no doubt that some families will plan on spending their Christmas vacations on the road and will definitely be bringing their four-legged friends along with them. Some might use private or rental cars, while others might resort to traveling by way of public transport.

So if you're planning to go out of town for the holidays and want your beloved dog or cat by your side, follow these steps in making your trip smooth and easy.

Traveling on Trains

Unlike airplanes, traveling with pets on trains is a far cheaper alternative and is less stressful for both you and your pets. However, there are still certain rules that need to be followed.

The first step you need to take is to do your research on train operators that allow you to have your pets inside the train. Next, read up on the train's rules and regulations regarding pets on the train.

Some might require your pets to be hand-carried, placed on a carrier, put on a leash or wear a muzzle. Presenting recent rabies and vaccination certificates can be of big help as well.

Figure out the cost for bringing your pets along on the train. Some operators might not charge you if your pets sit on your lap all throughout the trip. But if your pet is big, you might as well buy an extra ticket so that your pet can take up a seat.

Make sure your pets are physically and mentally ready for the trip. Help them get used to whatever traveling method they might end up taking weeks before the scheduled trip.

And when that day comes, keep them comfortable and contented at all times. No other person knows your pet best except you. So don't forget to bring along its favorite toy or treat to help him keep calm and well behaved all throughout the trip.

Traveling on Buses

Traveling on buses is the most cost-efficient way of traveling, especially if you're on a holiday trip. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for when you're traveling on a bus with your pets.

The rules for traveling with pets on trains and buses are generally the same, but you have to take into consideration several factors, such as the fellow passenger you'll possibly be sitting next to inside the bus.

This person might be someone who fears dogs or has allergies to cats. So before you take your seat, ask permission from the person you might be sitting next to if you could sit down with your pet.

If you're not in luck, go to the back of the bus instead. This will serve as a courtesy to other passengers to prevent from troubling them with your dog's barks or cat's meows.
