A boat with about 15 people capsized seven miles east off the coast of Miami on Wednesday morning around 1 a.m., the Associated Press reported.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, four women have died and 10 others were rescued, the AP reported.
After the Coast Guard received the report of the capsized vessel, dispatchers from Miami-Dade County rushed to the scene by boat and helicopter, according to the AP. When the Coast Guard arrived, the nine survivors were clinging to the hull of the boat which was overturned. The 10th survivor was found in the water and was taken to Station Miami Beach where there were emergency crews waiting, according to the AP.
According to Cmdr. Darren Caprara, the survivors are all in good condition and were taken into custody by the Coast Guard and are being held on a Coast Guard vessel at sea. It's unclear if they will be brought to the U.S., or will be sent back, the AP reported.
The Coast Guard halted the search for possible additional survivors, Caprara announced later Wednesday morning. The group of survivors who were found were Haitian and Jamaican nationals and authorities are investigating if they are part of a human smuggling operation, the AP reported.
