Four men suspected of terrorism are being investigated following their arrest in Britain on Monday after a raid by anti-terror police, the Sacramento Bee reported.
The firearms unit of the London Police took part in the raid as British officers rarely carry guns with them. The Metropolitan Police said four men were detained following the investigation that began on Sunday for "commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism."
The arrests of the men, aged 25 to 29, took place in various locations across England. Two men, both aged 25, were arrested on a street in east London; a third man, aged 28, was arrested at a house in Notting Hill; and the fourth man, 29, was arrested on a street in Peckham, according to AFP.
Authorities said they were searching six other locations in England following the arrest of the men, who are all being held at a police station in south London.
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said Hatton rounds -- special ammunition to open doors and disable tires -- were used in the raid.
"They were used to shoot at tyres. No one was injured," the spokesman said.
Further details of the charges were not disclosed and the identifies of the men remain unknown.
According to British terrorism law, suspects can be detained for up to 48 hours. Authorities can also apply for warrants to hold them for 14 additional days from the time of the arrest.
Officials said the raids were the result of a "pre-planned intelligence operation" and added that "public safety remains our overriding concern."
According to BBC, government officials said that Sunday's decision to act was based off of information suggesting the possibility of a "potentially very serious" plot, although it was not as serious as previous bombings.
