Hollis Jane, one of Miley Cyrus’ bear dancers in the recently concluded VMA, felt so humiliated that she shared how she felt during and after the performance. While everybody is busy hating the ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer, the dancer’s personal blog post is giving us an insight on how worse it can be to be on-stage with her.
“I love being the center of attention, but that was something different. I was being stared and laughed at for all of the wrong reasons. I was being looked at as a prop…as something less than human."
Hollis Jane calls herself "a little person" and is never ashamed of her condition. However, that moment with Cyrus, as she can recall, was the first time she had been in a performance where everyone else wearing the bear costume had been intended to be gawked or laughed at from the very beginning. It was a horrifying experience for Jane and one that she will never forget as it has forced her to draw a line in the sand.
“For the first time I felt truly ashamed of being a little person. We were being used simply because we were little. It felt like society still saw us as a joke, despite the fact there is literally nothing different about me other than the fact I am small."
Jane also recalled that time when she walked out of Barclay Center shaking and crying after their first dress rehearsal. They were wearing the costumes with the crew and publicists and performers present to watch them. Luckily, her best friends Kerri and Kelly, who were in town for a visit, have given her the much needed support and consoled her. They were actually waiting for her outside and she walked up to them and immediately broke down.
Jane was invited again to join a Miley Cyrus tour but she declined the offer without more ado. “I wondered if it was worth feeling less than human again.”
