Samsung Galaxy Round is a promising new gadget in the race for innovative technologies. Curved displays were much talked about in the past years but Samsung was the first to unveil the technology.

Samsung is the world's leading smartphone making company that has turned into a profitable organization with its range of Galaxy S series. The tech giant has lifted the bar high by constantly bringing innovative technologies into its smartphone lineup. Samsung smartphones are based on the Android platform, which is run by nearly 80 percent of all smartphones. The combination has worked extremely well in favor of both Samsung and Google.

Samsung has worked hard to build trust for its brand with innovations, customer service and a good mix of marketing and technology.

Its Galaxy S4  set people's expectations even higher.S4 carries astounding features like air gesture controls, group play, dual-shot mode in camera and sound and shot mode, some of the features are a first for any smartphone in the market.

The South Korean tech giant has always aimed for the sky and formulated plans to gain maximum attention from people by bringing pioneering technologies. Rumors had long circulated that Samsung and LG were working on flexible smartphone displays, but Samsung became the first company to utilize the technology and unveil a smartphone with a flexible OLED display.

In 2011, Samsung showed off a prototype for a flexible display at the Consumer Electronics Show. But consumers were perplexed at how the technology will translate into actual working and usage. The Galaxy Round, unveiled Tuesday, rests all doubts and confusion.

Samsung's Galaxy Round comes in a unique design with a slight horizontal curved display. And if you are wondering what difference will a curved display make in a smartphone, then we will walk you through some pros and cons and you be the judge.

The curved smartphone is not new to people who are familiar with the Galaxy Nexus, but the Galaxy Round is different because it sports a super flexible AMOLED display. However, since the display comfortably sits in the phone's rigid body, the flexible display does not bend.

But does the Galaxy Round really live up to the expectations or does it need some more push.

The design of the phone is attractive; of course, it takes cues from its successful previous models like the Note 3. Besides the design and a couple of new features, as discussed in a previous article, is a curved screen really needed to enhance user experience. Samsung doesn't seem to have the answer for that but it seems it is proud at being successful in coming out trumps with this technology.

The Galaxy Round can be a comfortable gadget as it fits right in your hand. But it does bulge a little in the pocket. After all phablets were not liked for their large screens at first, but now people barely think twice before getting one. Galaxy Round might just turn into a trend setter, usability can easily  come in second here.

It might not be too comfortable to type, read or play games on Galaxy Round and all these functions are already available on a smartphone. So how much sense does it make to shell out a huge amount of sum for the device?

But if you can get past that, then the Galaxy Round debuts some basic features, which comparatively cannot be game changers, yet can interest some buyers. The "Roll Effect" feature allows you to check information such as date, time, missed calls, battery percentage by simply tilting the device. You can also change tracks with a short press to the left to play the previous track and a short press to the right to play the next. But these features can only be functional when the phone is placed on a flat surface like a table.

Also plastic flexible displays are important because of their durability. So far it is not clear if the Galaxy Round sports a glass screen or a plastic one. If it is a glass one then it is no different than the Galaxy S4 or the Note 3. Once the device hits the global market, we will be able to find that out.

On the plus side, the new technology in smartphones gives room for other innovations. Like the curved battery. The Galaxy Round features a 2,800 mAh battery, unlike the Note 3's larger 3,200 mAh. But at the initial stage it would be difficult to pack a larger battery given the unique design of the phone.

Samsung Galaxy Round may attract you with its unique design but since it will be a pricey gadget, we would suggest you to wait for other manufacturers to launch their designs.

LG may be close to bringing its own curved display phone, LG Flex. The battery producer for the company, LG Chem also launched the next gen flexible battery lineup, Wednesday. The company produced three variants, curved, stepped and cable. As the names suggests, curved battery is a perfect companion for curved smartphones. The Stepped battery features can be useful in filling dead space in any smartphone. The Cable battery will be flexible and sleek and suitable for wearable gadgets.

While this is just the beginning for the curved designs in smartphones, it would be exciting to see leading phone makers like LG and Apple bring their innovative products to woo the customers.
