Rockstar Games' latest big ticket title, "Grand Theft Auto V" has been met with levels of success that no one could have anticipated when the company began development on the open world crime action game all those years ago. It has set sales records in the U.K. by toppling "Call of Duty: Black Ops." In addition, in just three weeks the game has shattered lifetime sales records of its predecessor "Grand Theft Auto IV." However, it has been revealed that the game has shattered more records than people realized.
According to IGN, since the game's Sept 17 release, the game has been able to generate more revenue than movies such as "The Avengers" and "Avatar." This means that not only has the game broken several sales records, it has also broke seven Guinness World Records.
The game's records reach across the board for setting new levels of excellence for both video games and the broader "entertainment property" category. The seven records are:
- Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
-Best-selling videogame in 24 hours (selling 11.21 units)
-Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
-Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
-Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours
-Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours (it managed $815.7 million)
-Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame
In addition to the success of "Grand Theft Auto V" Rockstar has also launched its first foray into open world online multiplayer with the release of "GTA Online." In this mode users can create a character and pull off heists and missions in the online multiplayer world with 16 total players on the map at once. You can choose to cooperate and take on Jobs or get a little competitive and race on the highway with some weapons.
The multiplayer has been experiencing server errors and glitches but the company is hard at work to fix them in the coming weeks.
