The volume of families going on trips is heavy around the holidays, as there are plenty of reasons to get out of town. However, trips with children are a challenge to organize, and it can get expensive. With proper planning and careful thought, you and your family can still be able to enjoy a trip, even with a tight budget. Below are some suggestions:

1.) Properly do your research first. Look for options on flights, accommodations and activities and compare the expenses. Check for reviews so that you'll know what to expect and you will be able to get your money's worth. TripAdvisor is a popular travel review site with many user reviews, but you can also check Air BnB, Hostel World and The Lonely Planet (for European destinations).

For air fares, do price comparisons via Fare Compare, Travelocity or Which Budget.  If you're taking a road trip, check National Park Services or Discover America for site recommendations within the driving distance.

2.) Take advantage of travel apps where you can score the tickets at a discount, or find out gas cost, or learn about your destination's weather, or find popular and essential sites and attractions and other services. Check out Packpoint PremiumMaps.Me or Tripomatic.

3.)  Prepare ahead. Have a budget so that you won't go short on cash, and book reservations ahead so you won't have to worry about changing prices. At home, you can also begin packing your baggage early so that you won't forget anything during the trip, especially toiletries, medicines and first aid items.

4.) Pack enough items, but don't over pack or you'll have to bring too many stuff on your trip. With kids, there's a tendency to bring a lot, but you can get more provisions at local supermarkets in your destinations. Bring only what you need during the travel. If you need to keep the kids entertained, pack a few toys, books or coloring materials to bring out during the flight or while on the road. You can also pack travel snacks, so you won't have to buy at the airport, where it is more expensive.

5.) Be flexible. The trip is supposed to be a short vacation for the whole family. If you plan ahead, you lessen any travel mishaps, but do understand that things may not go perfectly all the time. Anticipate that some changes can happen and don't be caught up about it so that you can really enjoy your break.
