HBO has confirmed that is in "preliminary discussions" over the development of a "Watchmen" television series.

"Preliminary discussions regarding 'Watchmen' have occurred but we have no additional information and no deals are in place," the television network said Thursday, according to Collider, who first reported the news.

Meetings have taken place between the network and Zack Snyder, who directed the 2009 film adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel. "Watchmen" is set "in an alternate 1980s timeline, where superheroes have been outlawed or work for the government," IGN reported.

The HBO network and "Watchmen" publisher DC Comics, both owned by Time Warner, have not revealed any further details regarding the project, and it is not yet clear whether the series is a reboot, remake or prequel, like the "Before Watchmen" comic book series released by DC Comics in 2012, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Snyder is currently directing another DC Comics feature film "Batman v Superman," which is slated to hit theaters in March 2016.
