At the time of his casting, many loyal fans were skeptical of Daniel Craig as James Bond. But in the ensuing nine years, the critical and financial success of "Casino Royale" and "Skyfall" (we're not going to discuss the mistake that was "Quantum of Solace") has proven that Craig's unique take on the iconic character resonates with fans. Unfortunately, he may not be around as 007 much longer.

In the lead up to this November's heavily anticipated "Spectre," rumors that this would be Craig's last turn as Bond began to emerge. Asked in a recent interview with Esquire if he would continue as Bond after "Spectre," Craig offered no absolutes though his answer certainly pointed towards the negative.

"At this moment, no. I have a life and I've got to get on with it a bit. But we'll see."

Craig first nabbed the James Bond role back in October of 2005, following Pierce Brosnan in the long line of central secret agents. Martin Cambell's "Casino Royale" helped to reboot the somewhat deflated franchise by exploring Bond's origin story in an interesting and entertaining way. The film was such a success that Craig began drawing comparisons to Sean Connery's Bond in the hierarchy of actors who have portrayed the International Man of Mystery. The stumble that was "Quantum of Solace" was then quickly forgotten when "Skyfall" became the first film in the series to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

If "Spectre" lives up to the considerable hype, it will cement Craig's legacy as one of the top Bonds of all-time.

As for who will take over the role if Craig does step away, there are several actors that have been rumored to be in contention. Damien Lewis ("Homeland"), Idris Elba ("Pacific Rim"), Tom Hardy ("Mad Max: Fury Road"), Henry Cavill ("Man of Steel") and Michael Fassbender ("12 Years a Slave") are all viable candidates that have been connected to the coveted position at one time or another.

Perhaps a more interesting question is which director will take over for Sam Mendes? Here are a few suggestions if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Regardless of how this all plays out, Craig has been a quality addition to the Bond lineage and movie-goers can't wait to see "Spectre" this November.
