Monroe Isadore Update: Arkansas Police Officer On Leave Following Death Of 107-Year-Old Man

An Arkansas police officer involved in the shootout that left 107-year-old Monroe Isadore dead is on paid leave, The Washington Post reported.

The unnamed officer was placed on leave immediately after he shot Isadore according to Pine Bluff Police Sgt. David DeFoor.

"That is department policy when there's an officer-involved shooting that they're put on admin leave until the investigation is completed," DeFoor said.

Officials said the officer has not been charged with any wrongdoing. He is believed to be the only officer who shot at Isadore.

Although authorities claim they attempted to negotiate with Isadore for hours before they shot him, residents of Pine Bluff are skeptical of how Isadore - a respected, churchgoing man - was a part of such a violent situation.

Laurie Barlow, 48, of Lonoke, told officers she was helping Isadore with his move to a new home. When she arrived at his house on Saturday, he reportedly became defensive towards Barlow.

"Ms. Barlow stated his granddaughter finally got him to open the door and she went around to speak with Mr. Isadore, at that time she stated Mr. Isadore raised his arm and pointed a gun at her and stated 'You better stop breaking in to my house,'" the report read.

Once Barlow and Isadore's granddaughter were escorted out of the house, police entered the home and Isadore shot through a door after they announced they were inside. After negotiation efforts failed, the police called the SWAT team for help, who planted a camera in Isadore's house to see if he was armed and then planted a gas bomb and distraction device in the room. Once they entered the room, Isadore shot at the officers who fired back, killing the 107-year-old man.

It is unknown why police officers entered the home after releasing the gas bomb and distraction device.

"I don't know what was going at the scene that would make them go ahead and go in," DeFoor said. "When shots are fired, it changes the whole idea of let's sit out here and wait."

Prosecutors will be investigating the case this week.
