Missing Man Andes UPDATE: Uruguayan Found Hiding in Mountain Shelter Fled to Escape Child Sex Abuse Charges

The man who was rescued in the Andes mountains between Chile and Argentina was reportedly running from the law.

For four months, Raul Gomez, 58, hid out in a mountain shelter located about 9,300 feet above the ground. When a group of Argentine officials traveled to the site by helicopter to log snow heights, they found Gomez, malnourished and dehydrated, but alive.

According to the Associated Press, authorities were unsure as to why he'd set off on his motorbike in May, headed for this stretch between the two South American countries. He worked as a plumber for a living, and didn't have any mountaineering experience.

It turns out Gomez fled from his home country of Uruguay to escape child sex abuse charges filed against him the month before he shook town.

Gomez survived on whatever he could find in the mountain shelter. That included sugar, raisins and rats, the Mirror reported.
