Donald Trump his political adviser, Roger Stone, went their separate ways on Saturday with both men claiming to have made the decision to do so.
For his part, Trump announced through a spokesman that he let Sonte go because "Roger wanted to use the campaign for his own personal publicity."
"Mr. Trump wants to keep the focus of the campaign on how to make America great again," a campaign spokesperson said, according to Time.
But Roger Stone is saying something altogether different. The political advisor, who has also worked for Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, said he quit the campaign Friday night, blaming Trump's "provocative" attitude and ongoing battles with the media as reasons for his withdrawal, reports Fox News.
"The current controversies involving personalities and provocative media fights have reached such a high volume that it has distracted attention from your platform and overwhelmed your core message. With this current direction of the candidacy, I no longer can remain involved in your campaign," Stone said in a letter he made public.
"I fired Trump," Stone later said on Twitter.
In the tweet, he also cited Trump's negative comments about Fox News Channel's debate commentator Megyn Kelly – an issue that's also continuing to attact headline attention.
Donald Trump is distancing himself from Stone completely. "I hardly ever spoke to the guy...he played no role of any kind [in the campaing]," Trump said, according to the New York Times.
