Antoinette Tuff, a clerk at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Georgia, explained how she prevented another elementary school massacre.
While Tuff was fulfilling her duties as the school's bookkeeper on Tuesday afternoon, Michael Brandon Hill burst into the front office strapped with several guns and threats of murder, according to ABC News.
Hill, 20, ordered Tuff to call their local news station -- WSB-TV -- so they could record police officers dying. Tuff explained to ABC that it appeared as if Hill, 20, felt like he had no reason to live anymore.
"He said he was going to end his life and take all the cops and everybody with him...He had a look on him that he was willing to kill and matter of fact he said it," she said. "He said he didn't have any reason to live and that he knew he was going to die."
While Hill had made several disturbing threats by this point, he still apologized to Huff for his actions -- opening up the opportunity for Tuff to calm the unstable suspect down and talk him through the situation.
"I told him, 'OK, we all have situations in our lives. I went through a tragedy myself,'" Tuff said, referring to her divorce after 33 years of marriage and a business failure. "It was going to be OK. If I could recover, he could too."
After sharing the struggles she enduring throughout her lifetime, she eventually convinced Hill to put his weapons down and surrender to authorities.
"I told the police he was giving himself up. I just talked him through it," she said.
Before officials arrived on the scene, she directed Hill to empty his backpack full of ammunition and lay his weapons down. Thanks to Hill's efforts of dealing with Hill, all 800 students were were successfully evacuated and nobody was injured. Still, she claims she's no hero.
"I give it all to God," Tuff said. "I'm not the hero. I was terrified."
Although students, faculty, and visitors need to be buzzed into the school, authorities believe Hill followed an authorized person into the building -- raising concerns about security. Hill was subsequently arrested and charged with terroristic threats and acts.
