Back long before moviegoers were treated to a team up of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the roster for the big screen Avengers was very much in flux. For example, The Wasp was originally intended to be a part of the original team before being cut from the film. Comic book fans won't be too shocked by that as she was one of the founding members in the source material.

A dozen movies later and audiences will finally be introduced to her character in next month's "Ant-Man." Along with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Pym (Evangeline Lilly), Janet Van Dyne (Pym's wife) will make a brief appearance.

But what role will the former super hero play in "Ant-Man?"

"It facts in, in a number of spoiler-ish ways, but we will see Janet Van Dyne in action in this film," Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige told Screen Rant back in October. "And part of sort of what happened to her. And then we will understand why that is the reason that he [Hank Pym] doesn't want his daughter to follow in those footsteps. One of the reasons why he's always so upset about superheroes in general, dismissive of them in general and also a reason why he doesn't want her to put on the suit.

"Because another very logical question in the movie is, why are you hiring this ex-con to put on your suit and do this? The answer is, because he has abilities in cracking security networks and in pulling off heists that nobody else has. Which is really why he needs to do it. But hope is infinitely more capable of actually being a superhero in the beginning of this film, and we learn sort of that that's ultimately when Hank reveals for the first time for the audience, and even the first time to Hope, what actually happened in the past and why he's so nervous about putting on that suit. But there are things that we see towards the end of the film that indicate she could, she could get one of her own."

Reportedly, what happens to Janet Van Dyne (Hope's mother, Hank's wife) in a flashback sequence is a driving engine for Hank's motivations in the film. What that is and how it impacts all of the characters remains to be seen.

"Ant-Man" will hit theaters on July 17.
